The Top 10 finishes for Door Hardware

Graphite Nickel
Sitting in the middle of matt black and stainless steel in pigmentation, graphite nickel exudes warmth with attitude and charm. This is a a designers dream, as it is bolt, yet warm, and is not polarising like a Matt Black finish.
Brushed Nickel
Brushed Nickel is a subdued silver with a lustrous luminosity that speaks to the heart. Its pearl like hues bring out the luxurious tones and is the reason that Brushed Nickel is high on the list of favourites. Another benefit it pretty much goes with anything and is especially congruous with stainless steel.
Two tone-Brushed Nickel/Chrome Plate
This has been a game changer. It infuses touches of chrome into the handle with the main colour being brushed nickel. One of the most popular selections over the past few years, two tone is a fantastic choice where you want to merge finishes in other rooms that have chrome. The bathroom is a great example, where the accessories are full chrome. Two tone allows the infusion of finishes bringing about professional coordination.
Matt Black
Matt Black is really a tone of black with the emphasis being on matt. It pretty much goes with any colour. But for that really stunning contrast, try black on white.
Satin Chrome
Satin Chrome has been popular for over 20 years and continues to be so. It is a contemporary style colour and it has its genesis in the Bauhaus movement. This movement strove to combine beauty with usefulness and attempted to unify the principles of mass production with individual artistic vision. Satin Chrome compliments anything within this style but also has touches of industrial and post-modern periods in its DNA. Satin Chrome is also very common in industrial applications.
Chrome Plate
Chrome plating, often referred to simply as chrome, is a technique of electroplating a thin layer of chromium onto a metal object. The chromed layer can be decorative, provide corrosion resistance, ease cleaning procedures, or increase surface hardness. It is a striking finish and is often used in accessorising bathrooms or kitchens.
Satin Brass
Satin brass is a new and trending finish, and can be described as a softer tone to outright brass. Its style is vintage and Victorian but depending on the architectural style, it is very versatile. It is increasingly getting used in a more modern, designer setting, and if used correctly, its deep, rich tones add a whole new level of luxury.
Vintage Pewter
Like its name suggests, Vintage Pewter harks back to days of old. But its an incredibly versatile colour. It is a mix between brass and gun metal with hints of both seen in the stressed surface finish.
Rustic Brass
Rustic brass is much more brassy and ‘rusticy’ in the flesh! It speaks of hints of lighter brown flayed with undertones of mat brass. If you are wanting to make a classy statement, look no further. The darker colour is predominant but that only brings out the vibrancy of the yellow tones of glowing brass. It’s a new finish and a beauty.
Powder coated
We mention powder coated because it’s becoming a very common way to obtain exactly the colour you desire. There are over 1000 colours available so you can match anything. From yellow in the Bahamas to pink in Antarctica we’ve seen it all.
Factors to Consider When Selecting Door Hardware
Consider the Door Material
The first thing to consider when choosing door hardware is the material of the door itself. Different door materials require different types of hardware. For instance, if you have a wooden door, you will need something that's easily fastened to the wood, such as screws. However, if you have a metal door, the hardware must withstand the weight of the door. In this case, you may need to opt for more robust materials such as steel or other metals.
Style and Aesthetics
Door hardware is available in various styles and finishes, making it challenging to choose the right one. When selecting one, you need to consider the overall style of your home and the door itself. It is essential to decide what matches the style of your home's interior and exterior. For instance, if you have a traditional home, you may opt for door hardware that has a classic design, such as a brass finish. On the other hand, if you have a modern home, go for a sleek and minimalist design.
Functionality
Door hardware is not just about aesthetics. It must also function properly and provide the required level of security. When choosing door hardware, you need to consider the level of protection you need. For exterior doors, you need hardware that can withstand forced entry attempts. In this case, you may need to opt for deadbolts or reinforced plates, which provide added security. On the other hand, interior doors require less security, and you can opt for simpler ones that offer ease of use.
Size and Dimensions
When choosing door hardware, it is essential to consider the size and dimensions of the door. The door hardware needs to fit the door correctly to work correctly. For instance, if you have a thicker door, you may need to opt for longer screws and thicker plates to ensure the door hardware is properly secured. Additionally, you need to consider the size of the door handle. If you have a smaller door, you may opt for a smaller handle that does not overpower the door.
Quality
Finally, you need to consider the quality of the door hardware. Just like with any other product, it can vary significantly. Choose hardware that is durable and can withstand wear and tear. Additionally, you will probably want something that is easy to maintain and clean.
What Material Should be Used for the Door Hardware
Stainless steel: Stainless steel is another popular material for door hardware. This Steel is very durable and resistant to corrosion and rust.
Zinc: Zinc is an inexpensive and durable material that is often used for door hardware. It can be produced in many different colors and finishes.
Aluminum: Aluminum is a lightweight Metal that is often used for very low cost door hardware.

Your doors may differ from the standard specifications, so it’s always a good idea to measure the one you’re working with before purchasing hardware. It’s sometimes possible to modify parts of the door like the bore hole, though it’s much easier to make sure you know what size hardware fits your door before you buy. Other factors to consider are the materials your door is made of, for example, hardware needs for wood and metal doors will likely differ.
Backset: Most residential doors in the will have a backset of 2 ⅜ inches or 2 ¾ inches. This is the measurement of the space between the center of the bore hole and the edge of the door.
Latch Plate Mortise:This is the term used to describe the indentation, recess, or pocket in the edge of the door where the latch plate or face plate sits. It should be just deep enough that the plate is flush with the edge of the door, while these are commonly cut during installation they tend to be around 1/8 inch deep.
Face Bore or Bore Hole:This is the larger hole that contains the lock or knob/handleset assembly. Typically in the these are 2-1/8 inches in diameter but can vary greatly depending on the type of door hardware installed.
Edge or Cross Bore: This is the smaller hole that goes from the edge of the door to the bore hole, where the latch mechanism is housed. Again, these can vary greatly depending on the type of hardware being used but typically measure 1 inch in diameter for standard doors.
How to Maintain Door Hardware
Regular cleaning of door hardware
Regular cleaning with soap and water, and wiping with a clean damp cloth after is recommended for all door hardware. If using a disinfectant, be careful to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines as harsh or abrasive chemicals can cause damage to the surface of your hardware or protective coating.
Chrome finishes can benefit from applying non-abrasive car wax to preserve colour and prevent discolouration. While oil-rubbed bronze finishes evolve and wear over time, the colour will eventually wear down to a copper finish colour. However, wiping this surface with a little vegetable oil will help preserve this finish and make it last longer.
Regular Lubrication
Most internal lock mechanisms are pre-greased and do not require ongoing maintenance under normal usage. However, tubular latches used in external situations should be lubricated with a manufacturer’s recommended lubrication once a year. Occasionally, dirt and debris can cause malfunctions to the internal components, so a quick spray of canned air can help keep the lock clear.
Inspecting, Tightening or Repair and Replace
It is recommended that every year you do a quick check of all your door hardware and tighten any loose hinges or fittings. Undo stress on hinges can cause doors to become loose, so pay attention to any signs of wear and repair immediately to ensure the door is safe and secure and closes properly.
